NEW MUSIC BIENNIAL

New Music Biennial - 13th July 2019-15.jpg

The commission takes two texts written by American feminist poet Judy Grahn and fuses them into a compelling and innovative 15-minute choral work sung by the National Youth Chamber Choir of Great Britain. The piece is written at a time where women are questioning the world they have been told to accept, reconsidering history and community, and celebrating the power of the female. Simultaneously, young people’s voices are emerging as the most powerful, positive force for change in global politics. She Who begins as a fraught conversation between men and women, and blossoms into a celebration of the diverse, beautiful, collective voice.

Commissioned by National Youth Choirs of Great Britain with the generous support of PRS Foundation.

“The dynamic, lyrical, and energETic lines are tear inducing; a choral work of immense emotive energy.” CUT COMMON MAG

Taking place in London’s South Bank and Hull across two weekends in July 2019, the New Music Biennial featured 19 new commissions from a stellar line-up of artists and I was one of the commissioned composers.

It took place at the Southbank Centre in London and in Hull and the critically acclaimed free festival is a snapshot of the new music being made in the UK right now across different genres.
