Oscillation

Oscillation was an audio-tactile installation which incorporated a 32-minute music piece. It was created by myself and five visually impaired collaborators. It is a soundtrack of a human life, from death to birth and documents the seven ages of man.

The installation consisted of seven large pillars, each representing a phase of a person’s life. Each pillar emanated a different colour light- red depicted birth for example, and each column also had a varying number of slits cut into it. The amount of slits was decided on a creative level, i.e. death had only one slit that emanated white light, to represent the end of a life, but many members of the audience took these to be scientific in nature, and assumed that the number of slits was determined by genetic coding. I was pleased that the piece worked on a multitude of levels, and people found it to be a relaxing, meditative space for contemplation.

Oscillation was commissioned by PVA Media Lab, UK and the Royal National Institute for the Blind.
