Each Man Kills The Thing He Loves

This piece was originally created in response to Co-ko, a portable sculpture created by Bernd Münster and Burkard Hettinger. Co-ko was passed, by hand, from artist to artist for one year and travelled around the world. Each artist added something, either physically or conceptually, to the sculpture before passing it on. The only limit to this was the imagination of the artist- it could be anything- a drawing, animation, a piece of music or simply a word.

I wanted to write a piece that was epic in nature and evoked large distances, travel, the passage of time, and the ephemeral nature of beauty. Each Man Kills the Thing He Loves was the resulting composition.

The work then resided at Ground Zero: Transitory Audio Archive in New York. This was an exhibition where you could randomly choose pieces of audio art to listen to. I liked this idea of a stranger on the other side of the world choosing a work because they were curious about the title, or were working alphabetically etc, and that unknown and hidden connections and juxtapositions would occur between mine and other artists’ work.
